Edge 156: Chromium 156 underneath, CSS random() arrives

Stable Edge on the fleet is now 156.0.4314.42, on Chromium 156. CSS random() and scroll-snap pairs arrive; XSLT is on its way out; TLS unchanged.

Microsoft released Edge 156 to stable on 2026-10-22, and new edge sessions on the fleet now run 156.0.4314.42 instead of 155.0.4283.62. The measured Chromium base moves from 155.0.8059.85 to 156.0.8078.48, so web platform changes follow Chrome 156 (Chrome 156 post).

New

• Chromium 156.0.8078.48, as the browser reports in its full-version client hints.
• New CSS that pages can feature-test: random() and scroll-snap-type: pair, measured by our probe, the same as in Chrome 156.
• Edge's own changes, per Microsoft's release notes: redesigned site-permission prompts and settings, Autofill for passports, driver's licenses and other document types, credential details and notes from the key icon in the address bar, and an opt-in for launching Edge at Windows start-up on managed devices. edge://tracing no longer records traces; use Perfetto UI.

Removed or changed

• text-decoration-skip-spaces is gone: CSS.supports reported it on 155 and not on 156, as in Chrome 156.
• XSLT is being retired (Microsoft release notes): browser-native XSLT (XSLTProcessor and XSLT processing instructions in XML) goes off by default in pre-release channels with Edge 157 and in Stable with Edge 159. It still works on 156.

What sites see / detection

• User agent and client hints: Chrome/156.0.0.0 … Edg/156.0.0.0 in the user agent, and the Sec-CH-UA brands change from Microsoft Edge 155, Chromium 155, Not(A:Brand 24 to Not:A-Brand 8, Chromium 156, Microsoft Edge 156. The placeholder brand and the order change with each Chromium major.
• TLS and HTTP/2 unchanged: the JA4 hash, the full TLS fingerprint hash and the HTTP/2 fingerprint are identical to 155.
• Bot checks unchanged: bot.sannysoft.com flagged one check (WebGL Renderer) before and after.

For scraping

• Nothing to change in your code: launch options, the Playwright 1.60 client and wsUrl are the same, and every Playwright feature we test still works.
• If a target page renders XML with an XSLT stylesheet in the browser, plan for Edge 159: transform it yourself, or read the raw XML.
• Pin the previous major with version if you need 155 for a while.

Measured on the fleet

The same probe ran against 155.0.4283.62 and 156.0.4314.42 on the fleet, each when it went live: identity, TLS and HTTP/2 fingerprint, web platform features, Playwright features and bot checks. Host-dependent values (cores, memory, timings) are left out.
